History

NominateThe Order of Vandalia award dates back to 1960 when Elvis J. Stahr, then president of West Virginia University, outlined his idea of a special honor for those most loyal servants of West Virginia University and assigned the task of designing such an award to then WVU administrators: Donovan Bond, Joseph Gluck, and David Jacobs. President Stahr told these three gentlemen that he wanted a new award to be on the same level of distinction as an honorary degree; that it should be for outstanding service to the University; and that it should be something uniquely West Virginian. This committee developed a set of recommendations and selected the name Order of Vandalia – West Virginia University’s highest honor.

The connection between the name Vandalia and the State of West Virginia may not be familiar to everyone, but that was the name proposed for the 14th British Colony in America, if it should be established. The original 13 colonies were all along the Atlantic seacoast from Maine to Georgia. The 14th colony would have been a vast inland area south and west of Pittsburgh which would include about two-thirds of the present State of West Virginia. Those who actively promoted the 14th colony knew that Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, was deeply interested in her own genealogy and proudly traced her blood lines back to those Germanic tribes, the Vandals. Naming the new colony Vandalia, they thought, would flatter the Queen and secure her as a powerful ally in this enterprise. But then another group of vandals, dressed as American Indians, dumped a cargo of British tea into Boston harbor and doomed the proposed 14th colony of Vandalia.

The first Vandalia ceremony was held on the lawn in front of the WVU library in 1961. Since 1980, the ceremony has become a regular part of Commencement Weekend activities and the annual WVU Alumni Association luncheon. Members of the Order of Vandalia each have a membership pin, a certificate, a medallion, and wear the Vandalia sash.

Since its inception, more than 150 individuals have been honored with the Order of Vandalia award. If you would like to nominate an individual for the Order of Vandalia, click here to fill out the online form, or download this pdf version .
